Tiles

The conception of this project was incredibly organic, on a walk nearby my house I came across a box of plain white ceramic tiles, I took them home with me with a vision to make something from them. From there I bought some ceramic paint and began painting a scene of a crowd of people, a subject matter I have often found myself drawn to depicting. The repetitive tiles seemed to lend the self conceptually to the subject matter also. From there I continued making more collections of tiled scenes, as well as creating my own plaster tiles of faces. I really enjoy finding new mediums of which to evolve my practice.

The Tiled Fireplace

After sharing my first tiled artwork, I was asked to create a custom painted tile fireplace alcove.

Plaster Tile Faces

I then began creating my own plaster tile faces. Made from a mould built from plasticine, I then poured in the liquid plaster and after that had hardened I carved out the line work and inlayed more coloured plaster before sanding it away to create the illustrative designs. I loved this progression from the tiles as it allowed me more control with the form and the outcome I found more interesting.
